How to apply

Four steps to apply.

  1. Confirm your eligibilityYou're a graduating high school senior or a full-time college student from Greater Houston majoring in a journalism-related field.
  2. Gather your documentsOfficial transcript, resume, two letters of recommendation, and a cover letter.
  3. Write your essayMinimum 500 words, two pages double-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt. The topic is updated each semester.
  4. Submit your applicationApply online, or mail materials to the HABJ P.O. Box.

Do I need to be an NABJ member too?

HABJ is an affiliate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. National membership is encouraged, but local HABJ membership stands on its own.

I work in corporate communications — do I qualify?

Yes. Membership is open to members in every facet of print, broadcast and online media, education, and corporate communications.
